The greatness of a nation and it’s moral progress can be judged by the way it’s animals are treated.

 Mahatma Ghandi..

A lot of our time and energy is put into answering calls on reported Cruelty Cases.

We allow the person reporting to remain anonymous  although we do like to have a phone number in case we have trouble finding the location of the animals in question.

We answer reports of cruelty to Dogs, Cats, Horses or Ponies and even Farm Animals.

It is a very hard and often times sad job, but helping the animals in desperate situations can be very rewarding.

There are a good few Cruelty cases on our Cruelty pages but I WARN you

that some of the pics can be quite GRAPHIC………

Poor Rough Collie

The poor Rough Collie pictured above came into us on Sunday 2nd Nov 2008 after a nice family found her in a very distressed state and held onto her for a couple of days until I had room here in the Rescue. She had wads of dirt and matted hair which made her very uncomfortable and her coat came off in one solid pelt. She had numerous pressure sores under the hair from the pulling of the matts on her poor skin. At least she is comfortable now although she is rather bald at the moment but her hair will grow back in time. Even though all her hair is gone you can still see what a pretty dog she is by her head and how sad that her tail had to be shaved as well. Lassie has been homed and will be well settled into her home in time for Santa to call and bring her lovely presents.

Poor King Charles

This poor King Charles was tossed into my front yard Sunday 20/09/2009 while I was away.

She has no hair on one of her ears and a lot of hair missing on her bottom and under her body and it is very light on the top of her back and she had a horrible ear yeast infection but at least she is safe now and will be cured and will get a nice new home.

Update on Callie in her new home 14/11/2009

Here is Callie in her new home with her very loving family that love her so much and look at how she loves to be cuddled and how happy she is.

        Another Poor Old English Sheepdog

Cottage Rescue got a call on 29th July 2010 about this poor Old English Sheepdog and the animal was signed over to rescue, he was promptly brought to a vet where he had to be sedated to get all his very matted coat sheared off like a sheep, he was in an awful mess and he was suffering a lot of discomfort with all the tangled mass on him and his bum was filthy and we have no idea how he was able to go to the toilet.

He had all kinds mites and fleas and dirt in his coat, he is such a happy dog now and lives in the UK with a lovely family.

Here he is all nice and shaved                            Here is a pic of the pelt that came off him                      What a difference to the head above.

The poor dog                                                               His sore eye                                               Just look at all the matted coat

Collar embedded in neck of this poor Collie

Pics taken of Manuka the day she came in to us 23rd June 2010

Pics taken 14 days after treatment 6th July, what a difference in her neck.

Cottage Rescue got a call on Wednesday 23rd of June 2010 about this poor Border Collie abandoned in a garden.

She had a collar embedded in her neck and the smell was horrible of rotten flesh, we were lucky that we got to her in time because a couple of days later the eggs would have hatched out and there would have been maggots as well on account of the weather we are having at the moment.

She is very comfortable now, we have cleaned her up, removed dead flesh and cut the hair around her neck and she is on pain killers and antibiotics and is sporting a lovely yellow bandage that will have to be changed every day washed and cream put on her neck and will of course have the usual Manuka honey in her feed and put on her neck as well.

She ate a hearty supper last night.

I think we shall call her Manuka on account on the fantastic healing powers of this honey.

I will update her pic in a week or tow and there will be a big difference in her neck.

Update on Manuka 14 days after rescue!

As you can see from the above pics taken on 6th July 14 days after we took her in and gave her some tender loving care you can see the difference in this Collie's neck.

I am delighted with the way it has healed and how she has come on in leaps an bounds and has become so playful and friendly and what a smashing dog she is.

I can now say that Manuka is ready for homing but she will always have to wear a loose collar and a harness to walk her in as she may have certain tenderness in her neck.

Well done to Manuka and what a pleasure she is.

She is now is now very happy in her new home.

This poor blind old Labrador was abandoned

Cottage Rescue got a call on 21st April 2010 about this poor dog and the sad thing is that she was totally blind, she seems to have been abandoned as she was in a very emaciated condition and very dehydrated and had a bad gash on the inside of her leg.

Poor Hope spent the a few nights at the vets as she had to go on antibiotics and then they tried to stitch the wound which sadly was unsuccessful because she was not a young dog and she had that wound a while but she was so quiet and placid and all she wanted was love and comfort for the rest of her life.

Here is poor Hope lying down.

Blind in both eyes                                            Her poor injury to her leg and you can see how swollen it is on the outside as well

Sadly Hope was pts 26th April 2010, she was gone too far to save her and she was having seizures as well and it was the kindest thing to do for her as she was very old, very emaciated and had a few other things going on as well.

RIP Hope you knew you were loved in your last hours of need with a such a lovely family.

It's been a bad time here in Cottage Rescue with Hope being Pts and 2 lovely ponies as well.

Bad, Bad Karma to all to their previous owners!

Poor Shih Tzu Abandoned with awful matted coat

Just look at her poor body condition                                          Her blind eye                                                                  Her poor face all matted

Hair shaved from under her chin                                            Dreadlocks under her ears                                   1 kg of  filthy hair that was removed

This poor dog was found yesterday by kind people who contacted Cottage Rescue and she came into our care 20th Feb 2010.

She is a Shih Tzu who is no more than 3 years old but as you can see from the pics that she had a very uncaring owner who treated her very badly and I would think that she had never known love in her short life or the respect that should be shown to every living creature.

She had to be sedated at the Vets to have all her coat shaved off as it stank to high heaven and we can only try to imagine how awful she must have felt, how unloved she must have been, she had no nice bed to lie in. the cold and misery she must have endured. You can see she is nearly blind in one of her eyes and her good eye was totally covered in dirt and hair so this means that she has also been locked up in a dark shed for a long time, I cant wait to see her reaction tomorrow when I let her out into daylight and she can see again and move around in comfort.

Shame on you who owned and abused this little dog, how dare you do this to any living creature and also shame on anybody that knew of her or anybody that chooses to ignore any animal living in horrid conditions.

I named her Shelly.

I would like to thank her previous owners for dumping her and to say that it is the only good thing you done for her

and say SHAME ON YOU for letting such a sweet little dog get into such a horrific state!!!

Shelly has been homed in the UK, thanks to Stevie.

Half shaved under sedation                                                     What a sad little face.                                                   Comfy in her coat asleep

Here is the latest pic of Shelly just before she went off to the UK to get a nice home with lots of thanks to Stevie.

Poor Dexter the Old English Sheepdog

Before shaving                                           The middle of shaving                                             The pelt (hair)                                  After pic.

Poor Dexter was surrendered by his owners in July 2011 to us as the owners no longer wanted him and his condition is very like the one in the pic below from last year, very matted coat, he could not see where he was going and kept crashing into the fence and gate in the run so we had to cut off the hair around his eyes the evening he came in which gave him some relief.

A couple of days later he had to be sedated to be clipped and his bum was in a bad way as well with all sorts stuck to it and it is hard to believe how he went to the toilet at all but then half of it was stuck to his bum.

People love the add on the T.V. of the Dulux dog but they don’t research the breed enough as they need grooming twice a week with a brush and comb and be properly groomed at least every 3 months if you cannot manage to keep their coat long and flowing like in the add. Imagine how much discomfort he was in as his movements were very constricted with all the horrible coat.

He also had an awful skin condition under all that and he is on antibiotics to clear it up.

Dexter got a lovely home.

The Gift of a Pet!

A pet's love is one of God's greatest gifts always there for you their love never lifts.

A pet is a friend to treasure and love, a gift from the heavens and a gift from above.

When you look into your pet's trusting eyes something is there that no one can disguise.

It's a look of complete love and something to admire, it makes your heart melt and sets your soul afire.

When the day comes for you and him to part, your pet's soul is still with you and he is still in your heart.

And at the Bridge he does what he used to, running, playing, jumping and waiting for you.

And when you do enter heaven you will find your forever loving pet.

And cross the Rainbow Bridge together.

Poor Lurcher has suffered all her short life.

This poor Lurcher was brought to Cottage Rescue by a very kind person that found her in a terrible state, she brought her to a vet on Sunday evening as she was very worried about her and she came to the rescue the day after 26/04/2009

She is a lovely little Lurcher of about a year old and is totally terrified of everybody and everything, she has open wounds on her body and has been attacked by dogs in the past which we can tell from all the old scaring she has, she also has mange and was very dehydrated and emaciated and is now on a special diet, but she is very young and she should blossom into a real beauty and we have decided to call her TWIGGY as we know she is going to be very beautiful in time to come.

It is hard to imagine why people can be so cruel.

Her poor little thin body                                    The wound on her front elbow                                 The wound on her spine (see how thin she is)

Believe it or not this is a German Shepherd!

I got a call about this poor German Shepherd 27/05/2009 from a lady near Cashel, she had found this dog in her shed when she got home from work and I collected him at 7pm.

He is a young dog and is very emaciated and has dreadful mange, very weak, dehydrated and hardly able to walk and seems to be deaf.

Just look at his poor face and try to imagine how sore and itchy he must be.

The pain and suffering of this animal could have been prevented if his owner had obtained a simple mange treatment from a vet.

There is no need what-so-ever for this kind of neglect/cruelty.

No excuse for his suffering…..

Update on TWIGGY 31st May 2009

We are so delighted with TWIGGY’S progress, see the difference of her in only a month, she has put on lots of weight and she done so very quickly and has been Spayed by Marta and she has her 1st Vax and is chipped as well and see how her awful wounds have healed up and she is now a very happy lass and I am delighted with her.

Look how proud she stands now and so full of life!

She has been homed in the UK.

Poor Collie after a careless accident.

When she was picked up by me                                                 Sedated before the vet and nurses cleaned her wounds

After her wounds were cleaned                                                         Close up of her poor legs

When she came back to the rescue a few days later

I got a call from a member of the public 22/05/2009 about this dog who she thought had been hit by a car, so I headed off to find this poor creature stuck half way down into a drain, so I got her out with the help of a couple of people.

We thought at first that she had been burned but then we noticed that she had identical marks to both sides of her body, the poor dog was in an awful state and so sore and in great pain.

An owner was located and eventually admitted that the dogs lead had been left on the hitch of a car while the owner was doing something but another person got into the car and drove down the avenue and up the road for about a mile not knowing that the dog was being tossed around the road behind the car until the collar eventually gave way and snapped and the dog got flung into a ditch.

If you look closely at the above pics you will dark skin around her wounds which is bad bruising from her body hitting the road being flung about behind the car, the black on the wounds is tar from the road which we thought were burn marks, on her front leg you can see bone exposed and a vein, none of us can even try to imagine what pain she was in before she got medical treatment,

She gave all weekend at the vets and then came out to us here in the rescue where she spent another few days until a decision had to be made to PTS her as she had bad damage done to her back legs and she was very sore, nervous and aggressive and had to be sedated every time the bandages were changed and would have had to have another operation later on her back legs and we felt she had done enough suffering.

This pic was taken shortly before he went to live in the Uk.

What a big difference in this boy now,

this pic was taken this evening 25/06/2009, he is coming on great.

Poor Abandoned Stray Dog!

I got a call about this dog on 30/06/2009 very early in the morning from a lady that had caught him in her shed, she had been feeding him for a while as he was straying.

He had been hit with a car on Saturday evening and she could not catch  him until Tuesday morning so went and collected him, we were expecting a half wild dog and I was pleasantly surprised to find him a lovely friendly young dog and quite handsome as well, I brought him over to Marta that day and he was x-rayed and sedated and then she put a splint on his leg as it was broken and very swollen and he is now on kennel rest for the next 5—6 weeks and he even has a lovely boot to wear over his bandage while out of the kennel to clean himself and help keep his bandage dry and clean.

He was so good when we picked him up and so brave even though he was in great pain and when he was over at Marta’s he never once growled while getting his leg examined, he will make a smashing companion for a nice family.

Update

He went over to Stevie in the UK and is now very happy in his new home.

Update.

This lovely dog has been homed in the UK and now lives with a lady called Jan and thank you to Ron for all his help.

Poor Lurcher

Her poor body                                                                                                            Her bottom full of sores

Her back full of sores                                                      Her thin tail without hair                                                 Her Pretty face

I got a call about this poor abandoned Lurcher that was dropped off near a lady's house who caught her and rang me, so I headed off to collect her last night around 9pm on 16/09/2009.

She was totally emaciated, dehydrated, covered in mange with only about 30% of hair on her body but she has the sweetest little face that would melt anybody’s heart.

She will have a nice bath today and we will begin her treatment and she will be a beauty in no time.

But imaging how cold, hungry and bewildered this dog is and she has a lovely kind gentle personality.

At this stage of my life in Animal Welfare I have given up trying to comprehend why people treat animals in this way.

Update on Lilly in her new home since 07/11/2009

She is very happy roaching and lazing about on the sofa as all Lurcher’s and Greyhounds love to do.

Her new owner sent us these pics 3 days after adopting her and says it was like having a new baby in the house with all the friends and neighbours and family calling to meet her, what a lucky dog she is to have been homed with such a loving family and she also lives with another dog and 2 cats..

Hard to believe that this is the same dog as above but this is Lucas in his new home in the Uk and Pam took these pics shortly after he arrived and he now lives with 2 other German Sheps and Pam was only meant to foster him until a nice home came up for him but she fell madly in love with him and she adopted him herself and she left him with the name Lucas and the reason I called him that to begin with was as he was so dehydrated when he came in I was giving him lukazade.

What a fantastic out come for this dog that came in to us in such dreadful condition but he will never look back again because he now so loved and adored by Pam.

How can people be so cruel to let a young dog get into this condition?

Somebody tried to burn this poor Lurcher

Just look at her poor back.                                            Here is a pic of one of her legs,

Pic 1 from her poor burned back.                                           Pic 2 from her burned back

                            Right side.                                                                              Left Side.

I got a call on the 19th Nov 2010 from a nice member of the public about this poor Lurcher that somebody had tried to burn, she is very weak and tired and sore all over and her skin is all infected.

We cannot even try to imaging the pain and discomfort she is going through, does she wonder why did this happen, will we ever find out who done it (I don't think so)
But please contact us if you have any information on: 087 970 1919

I would like to thank this man for saving her and calling me and holding her until I could get to him to collect her.

Sadly this Lurcher lady did not make it and she died a few days later, her injuries were to severe and we think now that maybe she also had internal injuries as well due to been beaten or kicked.

R.I.P. dear Lurcher Lady you were taken care of here while in the rescue and knew kindness in your last days on this earth by kind humans and you are now running free without pain at Rainbow Bridge.

What a sad and hurt face.

Some heartless human dumped this blind Beagle

Some heartless and cruel person dumped this poor Beagle 09/12/2010 in all the snowy frosty weather that we had recently on a road that was very bad with ice and Carrie (a good friend of ours) stopped to help him so he would not be hit with a car and other kind people brought him to me in a horse lorry.

What is so sad about this boy is that he was totally blind and not a young dog and had no idea what had happened him as he could not see. Try to imagine how he felt with all the cars whizzing by and another sad fact was that he was emaciated as well.

But sadly we had to have him PTS because he also had Diabetes and possible kidney damage.

So he is running free at Rainbow Bridge, head to the ground and sniffing as Beagles do and he has no pain or discomfort and he can see all around him.

R.I.P. Mr Beagle, I am so sorry we could not do more for you but at least you are not suffering anymore.

        Ignorance is an awful thing.

We had to remove this little Lurcher puppy this evening 18th Jan 2011 from his owner.

He was covered in mange and malnourished, his owner thought that he was only losing his hair trying to get through the fence, and you  have to ask yourself did she not get the horrible smell of mange from the poor creature, the living conditions were also very bad, no proper bedding and no proper shelter and the yard was in an awful mess.

Some people would make you so mad.

But at least he is now safe and in a heated kennel with good food in his tummy tonight and a nice snuggly bed under him.

I will update his pic when he has more hair on him and he has more weight as well.

And we Irish call ourselves Animal Lovers???

UPDATE ON LADDIE ABOVE

Here is a pic taken today 5th March of Laddie as we decided to call him and it is all thanks to Brendan and his wife down in Mallow that fostered him and cured his Mange and brought him from the ugly duckling that he was into this beautiful swan as they say.

He is a real beauty and loves attention and people.

A big Thank you to Brendan and his wife from Cottage Rescue.

Poor Cat 2nd October 2011

Just look at this poor cat and all the injuries on him, his neck and each side of his face.

Here are the injuries to his legs.

I got a call on Sunday 2nd October 2011 from a lovely couple in Clonmel.

This poor cat landed on their door step and they knew he needed help badly, he was very emaciated had all these injuries on his neck, face and legs.

We have no idea what happened to him as we are not sure did he get caught in something or was it somebody that inflicted cruelty on him, he is only half his body weight but he is such a friendly cat and is under 2 years old.

Somebody loved him at one time as he is Neutered and had his tail removed probably due to an accident as it looks to be professionally done by a vet and well healed.

We are hoping to re-unite him with his family once we have him back in top form but I am sure we will get a home for him no bother as he is such a dote.

This cat has been homed.

New updated pic of Twiggy now known as Genie, what a beauty she turned into and she is so loved by her lovely owner in the UK.
